With the development of hip joint simulation, hip arthroplasty implants, and gait analysis, a set of biometric data covering all the muscles that act on the hip joint is needed.
Using a rigorous dissection process on 18 cadaveric hips, measurements of all 24 hip muscles and bone parameters were conducted. We measured the following (a) total femur, femoral shaft, and neck lengths, (b) total muscle lengths, (c) intra-muscular and extra-muscular (free) tendon lengths, (d) bone angles, (e) muscle pennation, sagittal, and frontal angles, (f) muscle weight, (g) muscle volume, (h) muscle cross-sectional area, and (i) and bending moment. Data on more than 12,000 morphometric or anatomical parameters were collected. Correlation values between bone variables, muscle variables, and in-between muscle variables were computed. Based on their compliance, muscles were classified using functional anatomy.
This is the first comprehensive anatomical morphometric study which includes all the 24 muscles acting on the hip joint. It generates a unique anatomical dataset comprising all necessary data for musculoskeletal modeling and arthroplasty implants of the hip joint. A new muscle classification was proposed based on compliance where muscles of the same group would exhibit similar compliance and functional anatomy.The internal carotid artery (ICA) is potentially at risk during posterior fixation of C1. In this study, we performed a CT-based anatomical analysis of the relationship between the internal carotid artery and the lateral mass of the atlas.
We analysed 30 CT angiography of the cervical spine, and we measured on both sides the distance of the carotid artery from the midline, distance of the ICA from the anterior cortex of C1 and from the ideal C1 screw entry point. We measured the angle between the sagittal plane passing through the entry point and the tangent line of the vessel. Separated statistical analysis between left and right sides, between male and female patients, and differentiation by age were also performed.
Sixty ICAs were studied. The mean distance of the ICA from the midline was 23.3?±?4.3mm, with a minimum of 15mm. The distance between the ICA and the anterior cortical layer of C1 was 4.8?±?2.7mm, with a minimum of 1.1mm. The distance between the screw entry point and the arterial wall was 22.6?±?2.8mm, with a minimum of 17.5mm. The mean angle was 10.4°, with a minimum of 11°.
Although rare, intraoperative lesion of the ICA is reported and the spine surgeon must be aware of this risk. Careful preoperative planning is mandatory and the position of the ICA in relation to C1 must be assessed. The anatomical parameters presented in this paper can be useful to reduce the risk of ICA injury.

Study shows that the 2014-2015 EVD outbreak causes more than 10,000 deaths. In this paper, we propose and analyze a deterministic model to study the transmission dynamics of EVD in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. Our analyses show that the model has two equilibria (1) the disease-free equilibrium (DFE) which is locally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number ([Formula see text]) is less than unity and unstable if it is greater than one, and (2) an endemic equilibrium (EE) which is globally asymptotically stable when [Formula see text] is greater than unity. Furthermore, the backward bifurcation occurs, a coexistence between a stale DFE and a stable EE even if the [Formula see text] is less than unity, which makes the disease control more strenuous and would depend on the initial size of subpopulation.
